Fortress of Our Lady of Assumption
Built by the Dutch in 1649 and rebuilt in 1817, the old Schönnenborch Fort nowadays holds the 10th military region within its walls. This is the birthplace of the city - in order to enter you must get an authorization in the reception.

José de Alencar Theater
Built in 1908 in neoclassic and art-nouveau style, this theater was restored in 1990, with a major part of the metallic structures being made in Scotland. Was made a landmark by the National Historic Heritage.

Ponte Metálica (Metallic Bridge)
Also known as Ponte dos Ingleses (Bridge of the Englishmen), this is where the most beautiful sunset can be witnessed and, with a bit of luck, dolphins can be seen playing in the sea.

Centro Cultural Dragão do Mar (Dragão do Mar Cultural Center)
Many communicating buildings compose the Centro Cultural, a modern edifice, which includes: a museum of Natural History, where there is a reproduction of the skeleton of a giant sloth; an anthropology museum, which aims to preserve the culture of the Indians who inhabited and still inhabit Ceará to this day; the Memorial da Cultural Cearense; as well as a library, theaters, cinemas and a planetarium.

Volta da Jurema
This is for those who care about their health. It’s a place where locals and tourists can take a stroll and practice sports (don't miss the praça dos estressados (“square for stressed people”). Area with a lot of bars and stalls, as well as a handicraft market (with the best prices) and the famous Iracema statue. There is a variety of peddlers selling typical food, among which we recommend Tapioca com leite moça and caipirinha.

Iracema Statue
The immortal character in the work of the also immortal Ceará writer José de Alencar, Iracema, the Indian with the honeyed lips, used to bathe in our beaches.

Parque do Cocó (Cocó Park)
The largest urban ecological zone in Latin America, it features a 446 hectare green area encrusted in the city, with a preponderance of mangroves. It is possible to go on a boat tour along the River Cocó and admire all the beauty of its fauna and flora.

Farol do Mucuripe (Mucuripe Lighthouse)
Also known as farol velho (“old lighthouse”), this is an important landmark of Fortaleza. Disabled in 1959, nowadays it is only used for tourism.

Casa de José de Alencar (House of José de Alencar)
Small house where the great writer José de Alencar was born in 1823. Located on a ranch full of green, where it is also possible to see the ruins of what once was Ceará’s first steam engine.
Open for visitors on Mondays from 2 to 5 PM and Tuesdays through Sundays from 8 AM to 12 noon and from 2 to 5 PM.
